The second jewel of the Triple Crown has arrived and we’ve got all the events just for you! From the Hot Air Balloons at Turf Valley to the live music of InFieldFest, you’re sure to find a way to celebrate the 138th Preakness! We’ve even created a special Maryland themed dessert for the occasion – our Berger Cookie Trifle!

Special Event to Celebrate Secretariat’s 40th Anniversary

Preakness Frog Hop
Wednesday, May 15th

Free and open to all ages!

The spirit of The Preakness horse race comes alive as kids and adults jockey their jumpin’ frogs to the finish line at this 47th annual event. Trophies awarded to the first four finishers with ribbons for all participants.

Only one frog may be entered per jockey. The frog must be at least 4 inches in length from nose to tail (not counting the legs). If you have extra frogs, please bring them so another child may participate.

Preakness Celebration Hot Air Balloon Festival and Launch

Enjoy our annual Hot Air Balloon Festival, perfect for young children and those young at heart. There will be family activities, handmade crafts, retail and food vendors, and live entertainment. Balloon related activities will include tethered hot air balloon rides, a walk-through of an inflated hot air balloon, pilot demonstrations, balloon launches and the nightly Balloon Glow at dusk.

On Saturday, May 18th, the Balloon Festival will culminate with the launching of the balloons at 6:30 am.

Admission to the Preakness Celebration Hot Air Balloon Festival is free and open to the public. All parking is at the Howard County Fairgrounds, with a donation of $5 per car. Donations benefit the Elkridge Adult Athletic Association. Balloon rides and flights will be fee-based. Please call Ron Broderick, Balloonmeister, at 410-442-5566, to schedule your balloon flight!

Experience sunrise over Old Hilltop at Pimlico. The 20 minute tours run from 6am – 9am, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday of Preakness Week. After enjoying sunrise on the Grandstand Apron, you will get an insider’s perspective on racing during an escorted tour of the Preakness Stakes Barn. You never know who you may run into on the backside…trainers, vets, owners, blacksmiths, exercise riders or jockeys. The Barn area is one place you can count on an interesting story! You will have an opportunity to shop for Preakness Souvenirs, stop by the Pimlico Museum and maybe even peek into the jockey’s quarters, then head back outside to watch the horses go through their morning workouts. The tour guides bring with them a wealth of experience and add a personal touch that can’t be beat!

Black-Eyed Susan Day

One of Pimlico’s oldest stakes races, the Black-Eyed Susan was first run at Pimlico in 1919. The mile and one-eighth test, for three-year-old fillies is traditionally run the Friday before the Preakness and has long been recognized as the middle jewel of the traditional filly Triple Crown, which also includes the Kentucky Oaks Stakes and the Acorn. Don’t miss any of the fun, including:

• A 13-race program, including the $500,000 Black-Eyed Susan Stakes (G2), the $300,000 Pimlico Special (G3), the $30,000 Pimlico “Battle of the Sexes” Jockey Challenge with eight of the top riders, and the Lady Legends for the Cure IV Race.

• The People’s Pink Party and first ever infield concert featuring Goo Goo Dolls, Rodney Atkins and Rachel Farley.

• Handicapping sessions, celebrity jockey autograph sessions, book signings, and more!!

138th Running of the Preakness Stakes and InFieldFest

One of the nation’s largest, single-day, annual sporting events! Once again Baltimore’s Old Hilltop comes alive with the running of the 138th Preakness Stakes, where the finest three-year old thoroughbreds will compete for $1 million in the middle jewel of the Triple Crown.

The day will feature live performances by international superstar Pitbull and hip-hop duo Macklemore & Ryan Lewis. Both artists will play extended sets on the Main Stage. Afrojack will open the main stage with electronic dance music.

In addition to the main stage headliners, Preakness InfieldFest will host live music from Chevelle, Florida-Georgia Line and Kristen and the Noise on the Jägermeister Stage along with a variety of other activities, including the return of the popular Beer Garden and bottomless MUG Club. http://www.preakness.com/infield/infieldfest

Nothing heralds the arrival of spring quite like the Cherry Blossom Festival. This year’s festival kicks off on the First Day of Spring, March 20^th!  The Cherry Blossom Festival is always a big to-do and this year is no exception. There are tons of events that will keep you busy all spring. Here is a compilation of the ones we are most excited about!

Opening Ceremony

The Cherry Blossom Festival kicks off with a huge night full of local and international entertainment. From 5-6:30pm on March 23^rd, you can be transported to another realm watching performances that tell the story of how the gift of the trees has become DC’s greatest springtime celebration. Tickets are free to this inspiring event, but you do need advanced registration. Click here to get more information!

 A Cherry Blossom Scavenger Hunt

We love a challenge, so we were so excited that The International Spy Museum has a free scavenger hunt! This ties in the beauty of the Cherry Blossoms, while going on a great interactive scavenger hunt around the area! Download the free SCVNGR challenge app for your iPhone or Android! Cherry Blossom Tours

There are a plethora of Cherry Blossom tours. You can see them at sunrise, while taking a photography class, by boat, bike, and even a self-guided walking tour in some of the gardens in surrounding towns. All of these options range in price and they are fantastic ways to see the blossoms. If you are interested in honing your photography skill, any of the classes are great! The professional instructors give great insider advice on the best angles and spots! The bike and walking tours are a great way to celebrate the warmer weather and the coming of spring. These tours typically start around the 20^th of March. Cruising up and down the Potomac is a wonderful way to see the sights and monuments, while enjoying the beauty of the cherry blossoms. You can have dinner and lunch or even a romantic moonlight cruise. If you are looking for something different or even a little romantic, why not go paddle-boating on the tidal basin. You can get a wonderful view of the blossoms and see the iconic Jefferson Memorial. This will be a one of a kind view and can be a totally different experience if you have never done this before. For a boat to seat 2, it is only $12 an hour. You can walk up or reserve online here!

Official Food Tour

For any Foodies out there, the Official Cherry Blossom Food Tour is a stellar combination of DC’s culture, history and architecture with local flavors inspired by cherries and the area’s Japanese influence. Join your guide on a walking tour that incorporates historic and cultural sites, with visits to restaurants to enjoy dishes inspired by the Cherry Blossoms. You can meet the chefs and the owners and learn how their story came to be and the history of the National Cherry Blossom Festival. The tours run daily, 11 AM -3:30 PM, and costs $49 per person.

For The Kids

If you are going to be celebrating with kids, the Fly a Kite! Kids Workshop is a unique experience that your little ones will be talking about for a long time. From 10 AM till Noon, on March 23^rd, come make a kite at the Corcoran Gallery of Art. The cost is $16 for museum members, and this includes materials for 1 kite. You have to buy tickets early. After you build your kite, you can then fly it at the Blossom Kite Festival on March 30^th in the National Mall! There is also Family Day at the National Building Museum. There are hands on activities, interactive art demonstrations, and many indoor and outdoor performances that celebrate spring and explore Japanese art and design.

Cherry Blast

On March 29^th, the 5^th annual Cherry Blast: Art and Music Dance Party will be taking place on 500 Penn St, NE. This sell-out event is popping up in a new location, and promises to be a blast for people who expect the unexpected. Tickets are only $10 per person and will be sold online beforehand. This one of a kind event will be a night to remember!

The Sakura Matsuri

The Sakura Matsuri—Japanese Street Festival is the largest Japanese cultural festival in the United States. This huge event takes place in Downtown DC and features food, arts and culture, merchandise, and live traditional and J-Pop performances on four stages, and martial arts demonstrations. This festival is from 10:30 am – 6pm on April 13^th.

Irish Eyes will be smiling at the Waterfront Partnership’s 2nd Annual Shamrock Shindig! This event will take place Sunday, March 10th from 11AM to 2PM at Pierce’s Park, located at Pier V. Live music by Barleyjuice, a Celtic band from Philly, food trucks, beer, wine and mixed drinks, Shamrock Alley for kids, strolling leprechaun, stilt walkers, games and more!  Following the event will be 58th Annual St. Patrick’s Day parade which kicks off at 2pm.
