Exploring the Lord Baltimore Hotel

When you walk into the Lord Baltimore Hotel in downtown Baltimore, you get the feeling that you are in two places at once.

How can a charming old world hotel from the roaring 20’s make you feel like you are in a sleek, sexy hotel in one of America’s most contemporary cities?

Our Maryland concierge team got the chance to experience this first hand when they toured the hotel as part of our Charm School program*.

History

The Lord Baltimore was built in just 7 months, finished in 1928 and designed by architect William Lee Stoddart. The hotel opened on December 30th, 1928 and was at the time the largest hotel in the state of Maryland.

The Lord Baltimore is on the National Register of Historic Places and was visited by Martin Luther King Jr, this is exactly the kind of place that would soon catch the eyes of the artsy Rubell family.

The Rubell Family has the biggest private contemporary art collection open to the public, and they are constantly looking for spaces to redesign, reinvigorate, and revamp.

Rubell Hotels is a family-owned business committed to reconstructing architectural gems into reasonably priced, swanky hot-spots. Rubell Hotels acquired the Lord Baltimore in March 2013 and launched a multi-million dollar renovation.

About the Art

IMG_8768The Rubell family hired Scott Sanders, New York City designer and former Ralph Lauren interior designer, to style the newly remodeled hotel.

Sanders aesthetic is contemporary, elegant, and fairly masculine; a look that transports you into a sophisticated Ralph Lauren showroom.

The hotel features unique, original art as well as classic pieces from the family collection. The pieces are on rotation, making Lord Baltimore a museum of its own.

You can find Google-inspired art and photography collages throughout the hotel, a project that features famous Baltimorians and places by the Rubell Family Collection’s designers.

The Rubell family not only gave life back to a historic landmark, but also gave the Baltimore neighborhood a little more culture, pizzazz, and functionality.

Today’s Amenities

Upon arrival you are greeted by a grand piano in the lobby, luxurious couches, and the most beautiful painted ceiling. In the corner, there is the LB Tavern, a cozy and sophisticated lounge restaurant. It is the perfect spot for a happy hour after work.

Across the lobby, you will find the LB Bakery filled with delicious pastries and sandwiches, that look almost too good to eat. All of our concierges said it just may be their new lunch spot!

While touring the amenity spaces, the concierges fell in love with the Great Gatsby inspired ballroom. With gorgeous chandeliers that hung from the ceiling, balconies draped with grey curtains, and sleek chairs and tables, you could not beat this room. It is the perfect place to host a high-end holiday event or Masquerade ball!

IMG_8781While the ballroom was amazing, the conference centers were equally as impressive.

As you walked to the rooms, you were able to admire wax paintings on the walls – just another of the hotel’s unique touches.

There were rooms of all sizes, as well as a “movie room.” Of course this projection screen could be used for a presentation, but why not treat your employees to an old-fashioned movie night?

Next, our concierges toured The French Kitchen. It was something straight out of Paris, with beautiful floral decor and brightly colored walls and ceilings. While our group did not try the food, they were dying to come back! It is the perfect spot to treat your group after a grueling meeting.

Lastly, our group was brought up to the Sky Bar, Baltimore’s only rooftop bar. The views were spectacular and the cocktails unique and full of personality – just like the Lord Baltimore.

Their Blueberry Lemon Drops and Jalapeno Palomas are a must! While you’re up there, order some sushi and a Trilogy then simply enjoy the view.
